The Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) was established in 2003 as an independent not-for-profit corporation, operating collaboratively with health professionals and organizations, regulatory bodies and governments to build and advance a safer healthcare system for Canadians. CPSI performs a coordinating and leadership role across health sectors and systems, promotes leading practices and raises awareness with stakeholders, patients and the general public about patient safety.

Using the 100K Lives campaign as a model, individuals and organizations across Canada have come together to develop a Canadian campaign to promote improvements in patient safety, using the same six intervention strategies selected by IHI. On April 12, 2005, Safer Healthcare now! was born. Safer Health Care Now! has entered the second phase of their Campaign. In addition to the six interventions introduced in Phase I, four new interventions have been added to Phase II. There are now a total of 10 SHN Interventions.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is an independent not-for-profit organization helping to lead the improvement of health care throughout the world. Founded in 1991 and based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, IHI works to accelerate improvement by building the will for change, cultivating promising concepts for improving patient care, and helping health care systems put those ideas into action.

The Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada is an independent national non-profit agency committed to the advancement of medication safety in all healthcare settings. ISMP Canada works collaboratively with the healthcare community, regulatory agencies and policy makers, provincial, national and international patient safety organizations, the pharmaceutical industry and the public to promote safe medication practices.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides essential data and analysis on Canada’s health system and the health of Canadians.
CIHI tracks data in many areas from information supplied by hospitals, regional health authorities, medical practitioners and governments. CIHI’s data and reports focus on:

  • Health care services
  • Health spending
  • Health human resources
  • Population health

Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit, independent organization accredited by the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua). We provide national and international health care organizations with an external peer review process to assess and improve the services they provide to their patients and clients based on standards of excellence. Accreditation Canada’s programs and guidance have helped organizations promote quality health care for over 50 years.
